Golden Key RMIT Chapter Newsletter 2009
Issue 3, September 2009

Activities and More Activities

Throughout semester 1 2009, Golden Key RMIT has provided a range of activities for its members and the community. To name a few: The Self-Defence Workshop and the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal.  Semester 2 is already under-way and will be witness to Horse Riding, Resume Building, Self-defense Workshops, and our Induction Ceremony!

What makes our activities different is the fact that they are great additions to your portfolio. Many companies nowadays look for extracurricular activities in addition to great academic performance. Recognising this need in the industry, we try to provide our members with certificates of appreciation for our larger activities, which act as written proof for prospective employers.

Search Engine Optimization for Online shops

Commonly known as SEO nowadays, these technique is currently one of the hottest requirement in the web development world. While it seems to be technical and complex the idea is to make it easy for the search engines (eg. google) to find your website. Think of those search engines as rats in maze, it would try every possible links to get to the correct page.

The more hints you give to the search engine, the better rank your website will be. Use title tag, meta tags, headers and search engine friendly URLs. More on friendly URLs next time. -Arvy (webmaster)

REFLECTION

Red Shield Appeal

On the 23th May 2009, Golden Key RMIT worked together with The Salvation Army for their annual Red Shield Appeal. The appeal is the biggest fund-raising event for this charity which is used to help 1,500,000 people in Australia. As a part of our community service initiatives, Golden Key recruited 20 volunteers, which were separated into two sessions, morning and afternoon.

At the corner of Nicholson and Princes Streets-Carlton, our volunteering team, under the guidance of the Salvation Army personnel, started to ask for donations from the cars stopped at the traffic lights. We were overwhelmed by the genorosity we encountered. Astonishingly some received AU$50 note donations. During the course of the day, we were able to raise literally thousands of dollars! We were surprised and thrilled because we were able to contribute something for those who are in need.

Overall, this event was a success and surely Golden Key is going to get involved again in the following years. So if you missed out on the Red Shield Appeal in 2009, don’t worry because, without doubt, we are going to need your help next year!

Daffodil Day

Cancer Council Australia relies on the help of everyday Australians to ensure the success of Daffodil Day. Each year, over 10,000 Australians volunteer to sell merchandise and fresh daffodils at one of our many volunteer sites across the country. Enthusiasm and a desire to help are the only qualifications you need!

Thanks to all that volunteered on the 28th of August – Your time has been much appreciated!!
